Time for an armpit detox?

These days, we’re all spending more time at home.

You might have been working from home for a while, or been forced into hibernation by Covid-19. Either way, it’s caused many of us to reassess not just our working week, but our lifestyles. And that includes our personal care regime. After all, if we’re no longer running for the early bus, hitting the gym every lunchtime and spending much of our day in hot, stuffy meeting rooms, do we still need a super-strength antiperspirant to see us through each day?

The answer for many of us is, probably not. Which is why more and more people are seeking out lighter, more natural alternatives to combat body odor and keep them feeling fresh throughout the day.

IT’S ONLY NATURAL

For decades, one of the prime ingredients of deodorant/antiperspirants has been aluminum salts. How do they work? Get ready for a quick science lesson…

Aluminum salts are soluble when they’re in a low pH environment – i.e. in your antiperspirant spray. When the salts come into contact with sweat their pH goes up, they become more ‘solid’ and form a kind of plug over your sweat glands. That’s what stops the sweat reaching the surface of your skin.

Recently, more products have come onto the market, which don’t use aluminum. These products don’t stop you sweating, but use natural fragrances to mask the body odor that sweat can cause.

Unfortunately, general feedback from customers has been that, though these products may trade on being more ‘natural’, most are less than effective. Thankfully, all that’s about to change.
